A stock index is an important marker of economic performance. An index is made up of the top shares from a particular exchange.
Often, the price of an index is calculated using a capitalisation weighted average. This takes into account the size of each company and it means larger companies have a bigger impact on the index value.
For example, the FTSE 100 (or UK 100 at Spreadex), is made up of the top 100 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE). If these shares increase on average the value of the FTSE 100 will rise. If the average declines, they will fall.
At Spreadex, you are able to trade a wide variety of indices from across Europe, America and Asia. You can see the full list for spread betting here, and CFD trading here.
