Euro stocks continue to point lower



European stocks continued to point lower heading into the afternoon as US congressional talks stalled and the US government’s partial shutdown entered the second day. Comments from Silvio Berlusconi helped Italian shares and bonds rally after Berlusconi told the Senate his People of Freedom would support Prime Minister Enrico Letta in a confidence vote.

 

Tesco fell more than 3 percent, leading the FTSE 100 fallers after Europe’s largest retailer posted a sharp drop in profits during the first half of its financial year. The negative earning’s from Tesco pushed down supermarket shares including Sainsbury’s despite reporting improved sales.

 

US ADP non-farm employment change came in 10,000 below expectations. The figure will be closely watched as investors try second-guessing the all-important non-farm payroll figure on Friday.
