Say Spreadex is offering a Man City v Tottenham EFL Cup final Total Goals spread of 2.7-2.9.

If you think there will be 3 goals or more you would buy at 2.9. If you think there will be 2 goals or fewer, you would sell at 2.7.

The game then finishes 4-1 to Man City. If you bought £10 at 2.9, you would win £21 ((5 - 2.9) x £10). If you sold £10 at 2.7, you you lose £23 ((2.7 - 5) x £10).

If the match finished 3-1 to Man City, and you bought £10 at 2.9, you would win £11 ((5 - 2.9) x £10). If you sold £10 at 2.7, you would lose £13 ((2.7 - 4) x £10).

If the game ended up 3-0 to Tottenham, and you bought £10 at 2.9, you would win £1 ((3 - 2.9) x £10). If you you sold £10 at 2.7, you would lose £3 ((2.7 - 3) x £10).

If the game finished 2-0 to Man City, and you bought £10 at 2.9, you would lose £9 ((2  - 2.9) x £10). If you sold £10 at 2.7, however, you would win £7 ((2.7 - 2) x £10).

What about a goalless draw? If you bought £10 at 2.9, you would lose £29 ((0 - 2.9) x £10). If you sold £10 at 2.7, you would win £27 ((2.7 - 0) x £10).
