Karl Burke’s son of Dubawi had looked in need of a stiffer test of stamina when runner-up over 1m1f at the Curragh on his penultimate start. In the past ten years newcomers are just one from 61 in this and by ignoring the nine qualifiers in this renewal we are left with a shortlist of just four – AMICA (stall 13 of 13), BOUVIER (stall 1), STELLENBOSCH (stall 3) and TAP DANCER (stall 7). I’m especially interested in the last-named, whose stablemate Wisper was desperate unlucky here yesterday. The daughter of Territories needed the experience when a highly-respectable 66-1 fifth of 13 at Salisbury on last month’s debut and backing her sire’s progeny on their second career start, on turf only, would have found seven winners from 29 runners (prior to the run of Velvet Vortex in the 8.40 at Leicester last night) for a profit of £26.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 3.67, A/E = 1.91). There’s not a huge amount of early pace on offer in this 1m handicap given the size of the field and JUNGLE MAC, well drawn in stall 2 of 20 should be able to stalk likely leader THE ICE PHOENIX (stall 13) before kicking on in the straight. Jack Channon’s gelding fared best of the prominent racers when third to subsequent Britannia winner Mickley at Doncaster in late May, form that was also franked by fourth-placed Love Billy Boy who scored at Chester on his next outing. Jungle Mac’s three subsequent runs have produced form figures of 221 (1-3), with the first defeat by a head. This consistent sort now has form figures of 3221343221 (2-10) since his debut defeat at Redcar last spring and it will be disappointing if he isn’t in the frame once again.
