Andrew heads to Ayr and Newcastle’s evening AW card for his two recommended bets/trades on Tuesday, October 1st.

AYR 4.00

SIR GARFIELD bombed out at Catterick on his penultimate start, finishing eighth of 13 as a 3-1 joint-favourite, but raced in No Man’s Land down the middle of the track when it helped to challenge against either rail. Aside from that run, his record in blinkers since his reappearance effort this term reads 12222 (1-5), with three of the runner-up efforts coming at today’s venue. The John & Sean Quinn yard usually do well with their runners at Ayr (Flat and jumps combined), scoring with 45 of the 261 qualifiers (17.2%) since the beginning of 2010 for a profit of £41.91 to a £1 level stake at SP and Sir Garfield rates a  buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market.

Recommendation: Back SIR GARFIELD in Ayr 4.00

NEWCASTLE 8.30

HARRY MAGNUS could only finish eighth of 11 at Thirsk last month but he started at odds of 100-1 on his first start since April and his first since a wind operation. Antony Brittain has his strong in good form after a quiet period and his four-year-old ran well on his second run back after wind surgery for previous handler Charles Hills in December 2022, finishing a 28-1 second to subsequent Group 1 hero Shaquille at Wolverhampton. That Thirsk race was a Class 4 contest that is working out reasonably well – the winner followed up and the fifth ran second when 11-1 at Ripon last Saturday – and he drops to Class 5 level tonight. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or play each-way in the fixed odds betting.

Recommendation: Back HARRY MAGNUS is Newcastle 8.30
