Andrew Mount's Racing Tips
Andrew heads to Newmarket (the first day of the Guineas Festival) and Goodwood for his two recommended bets/trades on Friday, May 3rd.
MALLAVELLY caught the eye when a 9-1 second of 12 in a 1m fillies’ maiden at the Craven meeting last month, faring clear best of those to come from off the pace when the tailwind made such tactics nigh on impossible. Jane Chapple-Hyam’s three-year-old will be suited by today’s 1m2f trip on that evidence, and she looks the value play against Godolphin’s short-priced favourite MAGIC DREAM. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
Recommendation: Back MALLAVELLY in Newmarket 1.50
DAVID PROBERT is riding well this season, and he has a good book of mounts at Goodwood this afternoon, with last week’s impressive Epsom winner PORTSMOUTH (4.25) looking the most interesting. Andrew Balding’s three-year-old was having his first run since a gelded operation that day and could still have plenty more to offer. His yard has scored with ten of their last 20 last-time out winners who were having their second run since gelded and it will be a surprise if he doesn’t pick up maximum points. SPANISH STAR, who bids to repeat last year’s win in the 6f handicap (3.15), caught the eye when fourth at Newbury on his reappearance (the same race in which he prepped before taking this contest 12 months ago), while desperate hero will appreciate the small field and soft ground ahead of his run in the 3.50. RATHGAR (2.05) needs to prove his stamina but has a course win to his name and might be capable of grabbing a place. Probert rates a good buy with Spreadex in the GOODWOOD JOCKEYS market, while fixed odds punters might want to combine his rides in a multiple bet.
Recommendation: Buy DAVID PROBERT in Goodwood Jockeys
