Andrew heads to the afternoon Flat action at Sandown for his two recommended bets/trades on Wednesday, September 18th.

SANDOWN 2.20

Andrew Balding won this 1m maiden with a newcomer last year and his ALMERIC is likely to be popular on his racecourse debut with Oisin Murphy booked. However, stall 1 could make life difficult if it’s soft enough for the runners to come centre/stands’ side in the straight and I’m going to side with his stablemate PARAGON, despite a modest effort (13-length 11th) over 7f here on his debut. Juvenile progeny of his sire Churchill usually improve significantly for their debut effort – only 11 of the 206 newcomers won (5.3% strike-rate, -£120.50 to a £1 level stake at SP) but those having their second career start were 22 from 154 (14.3%, +£76.32). Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price, each-way.

Recommendation: Back PARAGON in Sandown 2.20

SANDOWN 3.55

In-form James Tate has a solid record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other trainers, scoring with seven of the 28 qualifiers in the past ten years for a profit of £45.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. The fillies/mares were six from 15 for a profit of £54.00. EXPENSIVE QUEEN didn’t progress as expected after her winning debut at Haydock last July but could be revitalised by the change of scenery. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.

Recommendation: Back EXPENSIVE QUEEN in Sandown 3.55
