Andrew Mount's Racing Tips
It’s day two of York’s Ebor meeting (Thursday, August 22nd) and Andrew heads to the Knavesmire for his three recommended bets/trades.
Trainer Richard Fahey and owners The Cook Silk Partnership combined to score with 12-1 shot Yes I’m Mali at York on Wednesday and STONE SOLDIER might be able to give the same connections something else to shout about in the Clipper Handicap despite being three or four times the price. The veteran never got competitive in a 7f handicap at Chester last time but caught the eye over the same trip here at York on his penultimate start, doing best of the prominent racers when a 25-1 fourth of 17. He was the only one of the first five finishers to race up with the pace that day and the prominently-ridden seventh, Yanifer, was a winner on his next start. The 12th-placed finisher also scored at the next time of asking and it’s worth taking a chance on his stamina given that the track was strongly favouring early pace yesterday. He’s nicely drawn in stall 4, has the assistance of Silvestre De Sousa and most of his rivals like to be ridden patiently. Buy in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or take a fixed odds price, each-way.
Recommendation: Back STONE SOLDIER in York 3.00
This 7f nursery has only been going for the last four years but all the winners had three things in common – they were drawn in stall 10 or lower, they arrived at York on the back of a top-three effort and they had raced within the past 21 days, Backing all 16 qualifiers across the four runnings would have returned a profit of £16.00 and this system hit the one-two (8-1 and 11-2) from just three qualifiers in 2022. There are five who fit the bill this time around – Cyclonite, Miss Hathaway, Original Outlaw, Qaseem and HOT PROPERTY, with preference for the last-named who also ran in a 7f non-handicap last time, like three of the previous winners. Charlie Johnston’s son of Too Darn Hot bolted up in a Catterick maiden 16 days ago and has a handy draw in stall 6. Buy in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
Recommendation: Back HOT PROPERTY in York 4.45
Charlie Johnston’s ARISAIG heads the early betting for this 7f fillies’ handicap on the strength of her Glorious Goodwood win, but she needed all of the mile that day and the step back in trip on a pace-favouring track is far from certain to suit, especially if the tailwind is in evidence again as it was yesterday. The Johnston yard has traditionally struggled at York’s Ebor meeting with horses who prepped at Goodwood, recording just two successes from 104 runners (prior to Knightswood’s defeat yesterday) since 2007 for a loss of £79.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 9.33, A/E = 0.21). Sell in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market.
Recommendation: Oppose ARISAIG in York 5.20
