Wednesday & Thursday's Big Winning Bets

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

whn-12

West Ham and Manchester City advanced through to the final of the Europa Conference League and Champions League respectively with the pair looking to win their first European trophies since Cup Winners’ Cup successes in the 1960s.

Elsewhere there has been plenty of drama in the play-offs, the Dante Festival at York has been the focus of racing and in New York the world’s best golfers have assembled for the PGA Championship.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY v PETERBOROUGH UNITED – STOP AT A PENALTY MISS (SETTLED AT 40)

One of the most sensational play-off ties in years was played out in front of a raucous Hillsborough last night and if you have no interest in football, or conversely, live under a rock, Sheffield Wednesday overturned a 4-0 first-leg deficit and won on penalties to reach the final.

With plenty of goals flying in, including one in the eighth minute of second half injury time to force extra time, it was a match that was a loser for Spreadex, but where did the punters make their dough?

Well, those who were on goals or Sheffield Wednesday supremacy spreads came out on top, but those who had the foresight to buy our Stop At A Penalty Miss spread before kick-off at 0-2 made a pretty penny.

This is a shoot-out only market (meaning Michael Smith’s ninth minute opener from the spot didn’t count) and awards 10 points for every penalty scored and the first one to be missed. With full back Dan Butler missing Peterborough’s second penalty, the market settled at 40. It could have been better for buyers, but they will no doubt be chuffed with a win of 38x their stake.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC v HOLGER RUNE – MATCH SUPREMACY (SETTLED AT -15)

For the last few years, there has been talk of a changing of the guard in tennis and whilst Roger Federer and Andy Murray have succumbed to age and injury, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal have powered on.

However, news that Rafa Nadal will miss the French Open and looks set to retire in 2024 broke yesterday whilst on Wednesday, Novak Djokovic was bundled out of the Italian Open by Holger Rune in the last eight.

Rune played sublime tennis to wrap up the first set inside 40 minutes and whilst the young Dane lost focus slightly in the second set, he rallied back superbly to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. It was the earliest Djokovic has fallen in Rome since 2013 and with the absence of Nadal, will be the first time since 2004 that neither of them has been in the final.

Rune is being tipped up as a future star of the sport and those of you who sold the Match Supremacy at 7-10 were rewarded with an underdog victory. With ten points for the victory and a one set winning margin, the market settled at -15 in Rune’s favour as sellers landed a win of 22x their stake.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP 1ST ROUND – RAHM/HOVLAND (SETTLED AT -34)

The PGA Championship got underway yesterday and one of the pre-tournament favourites had an absolute stinker as Jon Rahm could only muster a score of +6 on a weather affected first day at the Oak Hill Country Club.

As of this morning, rookie Eric Cole is the clubhouse leader with a score of -5 through 14 after a day that saw a couple of Europeans put in sub-standard performances. One of the brighter lights though was Norwegian Viktor Hovland who finished on -2 after a run of three successive birdies on the back nine.

Rahm and Hovland were paired in a Supremacy market that awarded ten points for the winner between the pair and three points for every shot won by. With the initial spread favouring Rahm at 3-6 a crushing eight shot lead for Hovland saw this market settle at -34 as sellers landed a win of 37x their stake.
