Sports Blog 04/08/2016: UEFA Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round 2nd Leg – West Ham vs Domzale, Thursday 4th August 2016

Things all went a bit pear-shaped in the Hammers’ Europa League 3rd qualifying round 1st leg. A testy opening 20 minutes saw a Domzale penalty (converted by Matic Crnic) cancelled out by a spot-kick from Mark Noble just 7 minutes later. Yet West Ham failed to find any momentum from their equaliser, and early in the 2nd half Crnic scored again, giving the Slovenian PrvaLiga bronze medallists a shock victory. A lack of Dmitri Payet magic (the Frenchmen resting up after an excellent Euros) hurt the Hammers, though the main faults lied with an error-prone Michael Antonio.

Turning to Thursday’s game and Slaven Bilic’s side face the daunting task of not only over-turning that 1st leg deficit but doing so in the relatively unfamiliar trappings of their new stadium. A near 54,000 strong crowd should help them bed in quickly, though one imagines West Ham would rather have had their first competitive game at their new home be one that didn’t require them to get a result to stand a chance of reaching the Europa League proper.

Payet, Wales’ James Collins and Italy’s Angelo Ogbonna are still absent, so there shouldn’t be any radical changes to West Ham’s team. As for Domzale, they arguably deserved their victory last week, and will be aiming to pull off what would possibly be the club’s biggest result with a win or draw. Yet our traders are confident that the Hammers won’t be embarrassed as they baptise the Olympic Stadium, offering a West Ham/Domzale Goal Supremacy spread of 1.7-1.9 with a Total Goals spread of 2.85-3.05.
