In 27 seasons of Premier League football, players of 12 different nationalities have picked up the Golden Boot. In large part thanks to the first decade of the league, when the likes of Cole, Shearer and Owen were at their peak, England lead the way with 12 winners (including repeats), followed by the Netherlands and France, both on 5. But what kind of guidance can this world tour of the Golden Boot provide ahead of the new Premier League season? Spreadex spin the globe and takes a look at the runners and riders for 2019/20’s top scorer! England – 12 Golden Boots1st Choice: Harry Kane – Season Goals 21-23, Season PGMs 1050-1150In 2015/16 Kane became the first English player to win the Golden Boot since Kevin Philips in 1999/2000, before adding another to the country’s total the season after. He came close in 17/18, finishing 2 goals shy of Mohamed Salah, but in large part due to injury was well off the pace last season with a still solid 17 goals. Though Son Heung-min picked up the slack in 2018/19, Kane should remain in the Golden Boot mix this year, at a Season Goals spread of 21-23 and a Season PGMs spread of 1050-1150 (the latter made up to just 716 in 2018/19). Wild Card: Marcus Rashford – Season Goals 13-14.5, Season PGMs 650-725Marcus Rashford found himself the preferred option up front when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Man United, scoring more than half of his season’s tally under the Norwegian. Combine that with the potential exit of Romelu Lukaku, and the English youngster could find himself in an even more pronounced role, Spreadex offering a Season Goals spread of 13-14.5 and a Season PGMs spread of 650-725. Netherlands – 5 Golden Boots1st Choice: Virgil van Dijk – Season Goals 3.75-4.5, Season PGMs 190-230 Gone are the days of Dutch dominators like Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie (or even Dennis Bergkamp, who never actually won the Golden Boot). Maybe, then, it is worth having a punt on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, if only because he started every single Premier League game last season. France – 5 Golden Boots1st Choice: Alexandre Lacazette – Season Goals 14.5-16, Season PGMs 720-795 It is fitting that the French option on this list is an Arsenal player. After all, 4 of the country’s 5 Golden Boots were earned by Thierry Henry (the other was won by former Gunner, but then-Chelsea forward, Nicholas Anelka). Having struck up a fruitful partnership with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette – who last season scored 13 league goals – sits at a Season Goals spread of 14.5-16 alongside a Season PGMs spread of 720-795. Wild Card: Paul Pogba – Season Goals 10-11.5, Season PGMs 500-575Pogba is as much a wild card because of his inconsistent form last season as because he might not be at Man United by the end of the summer. If he does stay at Old Trafford, however, Solskjaer will be hoping for a slightly more mature teen-tally from the World Cup winner. Argentina – 2 Golden Boots1st Choice: Sergio Aguero – Season Goals 20-22, Season PGMs 1000-1100 2018/19 saw Sergio Aguero – who surprisingly has won the Golden Boot just once – score more than 20 goals in a Premier League season for the 6th time, an accomplishment only bested by Alan Shearer’s 7. It was also the 5th 20-plus haul in a row, a feat shared with Thierry Henry. Though he is now in his early 30s, the Argentine can still go, with Spreadex’s Season Goals spread of 20-22 promising a potentially record-breaking 2019/20 run for Kun. Egypt – 2 Golden Boots1st Choice: Mohamed Salah – Season Goals 22-24, Season PGMs 1150-1250 It is probably not a shock that both of Egypt’s Golden Boots come courtesy of Mohamed Salah, first with 2017/18’s 32 goals, and then last season’s shared effort alongside Sadio Mane and Aubameyang. With Liverpool expected to be among the title chasers once again in 2019/20, Salah is fancied to make it a Golden Boot hat-trick, with a league-best Season Goals spread of 22-24. Ivory Coast – 2 Golden Boot1st Choice: Wilfried Zaha – Season Goals 8-9, Season PGMs 400-450 While he might not be Didier Drogba, Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha is much sought after at the moment, meaning his Season Goals and Season PGMs spreads of 8-9 and 400-450 could change if he does make a long-discussed move to Arsenal. Gabon – 1 Golden Boot1st Choice: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Season Goals 19-21, Season PGMs 980-1080 Though there are persistent rumours that the Gabonese ace could be leaving London, Arsenal will be desperate to keep hold of last season’s joint Golden Boot winner given he gave them their best single player league tally since Alexis Sanchez left in 2017. Portugal – 1 Golden Boot1st Choice: Diogo Jota – Season Goals 7.5-8.5, Season PGMs 380-430 It is highly unlikely that Wolves’ Diogo Jota is going to do a Cristiano Ronaldo and nab a 2nd Golden Boot for Portugal. Still, he will be hoping to get into double digits now that he has adjusted to life in the Premier League. Senegal – 1 Golden Boot1st Choice: Sadio Mane – Season Goals 16.5-18, Season PGMs 840-915 Salah might gobble up most of the headlines, but Sadio Mane was every bit his equal last season, sharing the Golden Boot with his Egyptian partner, while scoring just one goal fewer in all competitions. He will be aiming to breach 20 goals once again, even if Spreadex does have him at a Season Goals spread of 16.5-18. Uruguay – 1 Golden Boot1st Choice: Lucas Torreira – Season Goals 2.25-3, Season PGMs 120-160 A bit like the Netherlands, Uruguay don’t really have the Premier League capital they did in the middle of the decade, when Luis Suarez became one of only 8 players to score 30 or more goals in a single season (Shearer is the sole player to do it twice). Instead the country will now rely on Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira for their representation, with the midfielder at a pitiful Season Goals spread of 2.25-3. Sadly for Bulgaria and Trinidad and Tobago, they are lacking a Dimitar Berbatov or Dwight Yorke in 2019/20. So why not have a look at 2 nations that are yet to win a Premier League Golden Boot, such as Wolves’ Mexican forward Raul Jimenez, at a Season Goals spread of 11.5-13, or South Korean Son Heung-min, at a Season PGMs spread of 470-545.
