With the Open from Royal Birkdale just a week away, attentions this week turn to the Scottish Open from Dondonald Links in Ayrshire. Swede Alex Noren, pictured, is out to defend his title in a strong field which includes the likes of Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, current Open champ Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar and Patrick Reed. McIlroy has attracted plenty of headlines, however the Irishman had a horrendous start, falling to four over par in his first four holes to effectively leave him out of the running. A mixture of struggles since changing clubs and problems with injuries have conspired to make it a difficult year for the 28-year-old so far. A tied fourth place at the Arnold Palmer invitational aside, McIlroy has toiled in most tournaments so far, failing to make the cut at the US Open last month. Instead it was Rickie Fowler who made a solid start in Scotland, moving to two under after nine to lead the betting at 9/2 on the outright fixed odds. Since winning the Honda Classic in February, Fowler has been in steady form with four top five finishes leaving him as many people’s fancy for the Open next week. Ian Poulter, still a popular figure for many golf fans, made a decent start also, hoping to build upon his second place at the Players’ Championship in May, however he was still way back at a 40/1 shot in the early betting. Tucking in behind Fowler at the head of the betting were Noren at 14/1, Scott and Reed at 16s and Stenson and Andy Sullivan at 18s. Not playing at the Scottish Open, but well in contention for the Open are world number one Dustin Johnson, number four Jordan Spieth and recent Irish Open winner Jon Rahm. In fact the Open promises to be one of the erm, most open, for some time in terms of the betting with 11 players all at 20/1 or lower leaving punters watching the action with great interest from Ayrshire as they ponder their Royal Birkdale picks for the following week.
