Can England reach their second consecutive ICC Champions Trophy final with a win over Pakistan on Wednesday? England are the only side to have finished the group stages unbeaten, escaping a tough cluster of countries that included Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh. Shockingly Eoin Morgan’s men aren’t joined in the semis by one of their antipodean rivals, but by the Tigers, who upset the odds thanks to a 5 wicket win over the Black Caps. Spare a thought for Australia, however; British weather conspired against Steve Smith’s side, causing 2 of their 3 fixtures to end with no result. Still, the Aussies were roundly trounced by England at Edgbaston, the hosts nabbing a 40 run victory (admittedly by the Duckworth-Lewis method) after rain brought yet another match to a premature end. With Josh Hazlewood on the plane back to Oz, Liam Plunkett, who sits at a Player Performance spread of 34-39, will be aiming to become the competition’s top wicket-taker; he currently sits on 8, 1 behind Hazlewood, but with the semi-final (and hopefully final) still to play. Joe Root, who sits at 53-58, has further to go if he wants to overtake Shikhar Dhawan as the top run-scorer, at 212 to the Indian batsman’s 271. Pakistan shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for Morgan and co., even if their only loss has come against India, with Spreadex offering an England/Pakistan Supremacy spread of 27-37 alongside a 1st 15 Supremacy spread of 9-12. The other semi-final sees underdogs Bangladesh take on 2-time winners, and current champions, India at Edgbaston on Thursday. While the Tigers required some weather-based luck to make it through to the knockouts, India have looked far more confident, though they did suffer a shock defeat to Sri Lanka in the group stages. Nevertheless, India are not only fancied to comfortably beat Bangladesh at a Supremacy spread of 38-48, but are the favourites to win the entire tournament, at an Outright Index spread of 64-68 to England’s 62-66.
