Joe Root’s first Test as England captain couldn’t have gone much better after a 211-run win over South Africa at Lord’s, so what will happen in the second Test at Trent Bridge? The Spreadex traders again fancy England to work their way to victory against a Proteas side that welcome back skipper Faf du Plessis, who missed the first Test after the birth of his first child. England are 4/6 on the fixed odds with South Africa 17/4 while on the spreads 25:10 England are 15.2 – 16.7 and the tourists 7.5 – 9. Even the 1st Innings Supremacy price gives the hosts a healthy advantage at a price of England/South Africa 36-56, indicating the Spreadex view that the England higher order will be performing somewhat better than the South Africa openers. In terms of runs, the predicted South Africa first innings total before the start of the match was 324 – 339 with opening pair Dean Elgar and Heino Kuhn priced at 36 – 41 and 30 – 35 respectively. As for England, after his 190 first innings blast, Joe Root is the leading England batsman at a Test run quote of 83 – 90 with Alastair Cook at 77 – 84 and Gary Ballance at 63 – 70. Moeen Ali was the star of the show with the ball in the first Test after his 10-wicket haul but there will be more focus on the likes of Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood on the Trent Bridge surface with the Anderson and Broad leading the way on the Bowler Performance spreads at 46 – 51 and 45 – 50 respectively. With South Africa also missing Kagiso Rabada after his outburst at Lord’s, Spreadex punters can’t seem to see past an England victory which, if that did occur, would send the visitors tumbling towards a first Test series defeat in England in nearly 20 years.
