With Man City absolutely hammering Steaua Bucharest in their Champions League qualifying play-off 1st leg can Celtic match their English counterparts when they host Hapoel Be’er Sheva at 7.45pm on BT Sport 2 this evening?


Under Brendan Rodgers Celtic haven’t exactly shone in qualifying so far this season. Yes they triumphantly beat Lincoln Red Imps in Scotland 3-0, but that comes with the dual caveats of a) Lincoln Red Imps are from Gibraltar, and b) they beat Celtic 1-0 in the 1st leg. While not quite as embarrassing Celtic’s away leg against Astana was still poor, a late Leigh Griffiths goal saving their blushes before the side went on to win 2-1 at home (and 3-2 on aggregate).

The start to Celtic’s domestic season has been much better, however, with a 2-1 (and admittedly late) win over Hearts in the Scottish Premiership was followed a 5-0 demolition of Motherwell in the League Cup. Arguably the underdogs the Israeli side held on for a 0-0 draw in Greece, before a 79th minute goal from Shir Tzedek in the home leg sent them through to the play-offs.

Despite Celtic’s spotty European record this season, Hapoel’s inability to score away from home should give Rodgers’ side the edge, Spreadex offering a Celtic/Hapoel Be’er Sheva Goal Supremacy spread of 0.7-0.9 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.35-2.55.
