Who is the best team to bet on in the Premier League?

But when it comes to betting on the top flight, which teams should you be putting your hard earned on? Well, based on last season, Sunderland come out on top of the Spreadex Premier League betting table and Swansea bottom (see full table further below).

Our analysis shows the final Premier League table for betting returns for the 2013-14 campaign based on returns to punters if they had put a £10 bet on every team to win, home and away during the season on Spreadex's pre-match fixed odds prices.

So while backing Sunderland to win at home for every league game they played at the Stadium of Light would have resulted in a loss, away from home betting on the Black Cats would have paid dividends returning profits (not including the stake) of £199.20 from 19 £10 bets - more than double your money.

Sunderland's big end of season wins at Chelsea, when Gus Poyet's men were a whopping 13/1, and at Manchester United, when Sunderland were a shade under 7/1, played a big part in their betting profits generated on the road.

Chelsea themselves, although usually much shorter price favourites for most of their matches during the campaign, still returned a respectable £72 (18.95% return) for anyone who bet on them home and away during the season proving there can still be value in backing the shorter-price favourite.

Above Chelsea however were Crystal Palace and Newcastle, who both recorded surprise wins over Jose Mourinho's men during the campaign, to help boost profits for punters who may have backed them. Palace netted a 33.21% return over the whole campaign while Newcastle netted football betters a 22.63% return.

The best team to bet on at home were Stoke, who had a great record at the Britannia, and who also beat Chelsea (there seems to be a theme developing here). 19 £10 bets on Mark Hughes' side to win at home in the league last term would have returned £140, that's a 73.7% return.

Manchester United were, perhaps unsurprisingly, among the worst teams to bet on home and away, producing losses of 20% (-£76.20) but Swansea were the worst team for punters, resulting in losses in total of £120.60 from £380 staked on every match on the Swans home and away.

So who will be the team to cheer punters throughout the 2014-15 season? Of course with Spreadex you can choose to bet on many more markets than simple match odds outcomes thanks to the vast array of fixed odds and spread betting prices on offer (with every Premier League game offered in-play don't forget).

But if last season's away returns are anything to by, Sunderland's 12/5 price to win away at West Brom on the opening day of the season could certainly be tempting a few punters while Swansea's 8/1 to win away against Manchester United may be slightly less attractive...
