Sports Blog 27/07/2016: UEFA Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round 1st Leg – Astana vs Celtic, Wednesday 27th July 2016

After an awful start Brendan Rodgers’ seems to be finding his feet at Celtic Park. A friendly victory over Wolfsburg and a draw against Leicester (which admittedly ended in a penalties defeat) are a decent pair of results, and will have gone some way to easing the embarrassment of Celtic’s 1-0 loss to Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps. Of course Celtic did go on to smash the Imps 3-0 in the home leg of their 2nd qualifying round fixture, with goals from Mikael Lustig, Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts; that initial defeat, however, will still be lingering at the back of fans’ minds.

Kazakhstan Premier League winners Astana, meanwhile, have had a similarly, if not quite as, tumultuous path to this point in qualifying. They faced FK Zalgiris in the 2nd round, and after a goalless draw in Vilnius left it until the 93rd minute at home to beat the Lithuanian champions 2-1 in the 2nd leg.

While on paper Celtic would expect to progress to the final round of qualifying, Astana shouldn’t be underestimated. While the Scottish side lost to Malmo in the play-offs last season Astana beat Cyrpus’ APOEL to reach a Champions League group containing Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Galatasaray. The Kazakhstan club were actually lucky to finish bottom of Group C (just 1 point behind Galatasaray) as they actually only lost twice, drawing all 3 of their home games as well as their one trip to Turkey.

It is this surprising Champions League pedigree, and of course the fact that Brendan Rodgers’ men lost to a team made up of Gibraltarian part-timers, that has given the home side the advantage, Spreadex offering an Astana/Celtic spread of 0.15-0.35 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.05-2.25.
