Burnley's Spot of Bother - Clarets Have Been Awarded Least Amount of Penalties in Past 6 Seasons

Liverpool’s questionable spot-kick award against Palace at the weekend means 59 penalties have now been awarded so far this season – but Burnley remain the only side yet to be given one.

In 18 matches so far this term, the Clarets have yet to be given a penalty, but the spotless feeling is nothing new to Burnley fans when you look at their penalty record during their six successive seasons in the top flight.

Only 12 teams have played in every season of the Premier League for the past six campaigns. During this time, Burnley have been awarded only 14 pens in total, 12 less than next least West Ham and Everton and a massive 33 penalties less than given to Manchester United over the period.

United’s 47 penalties are more than three times the number given to Sean Dyche’s side, while even second worst off West Ham and Everton have had almost double Burnley’s total.

Burnley have finished rock bottom of the table of penalties awarded in two of the five completed seasons since promotion, and of course are currently bottom this time around as they await their first spot kick.

If the Clarets go through the rest of this season without winning a spot kick, it will be the 2nd time in the past 6 years this has happened, after 2017/18.

No other Premier League team has gone a full season without a penalty even once in the same period – in fact no other Premier League team has suffered that fate since Swansea and Spurs in 2012/13.

In all there have been 59 penalties awarded so far this season, with Chelsea leading the way having been given seven. West Ham are next with five, ahead of six teams (Arsenal, Liverpool, Brighton, Leeds, Everton and Manchester City) who’ve been awarded four each.

Of the 59 penalties awarded so far this season, 83% have been scored, 14% saved and 3% missed. Teams are more likely to be awarded a spot kick at home than away from home, 61% to 39%.

Clarets fans can take some solace from the fact they’re one of only two clubs to not have a penalty awarded against them this season. Though the other, Liverpool, were awarded their fourth this past weekend.

There are seven teams that have had more spot kicks awarded against them than for this season – Newcastle and Leicester both have been given 1 penalty and seen 6 given against them, Norwich have had 2 for and 6 against, Aston Villa 2 for and 5 against, Wolves 1 for and 4 against, Watford 2 for and 4 against and Crystal Palace, who have been given 3 penalties conceded their 4th at the weekend.

Last season saw a Premier League record 124 penalties awarded, with 102 scored (82%), 12 saved (10%) and 10 missed (8%). Leicester City were awarded the most (12) while who else but Burnley, with three, given the least.

This season Spreadex Sports predicts there will be between 84 and 87 converted penalties come the end of the campaign and between 18 – 19 unconverted spot-kicks.

And Burnley fans can be reassured that the Spreadex traders think the Clarets won’t go through the season penalty-less. The quote for Burnley Penalty Season Goal Minutes stands at 90-110.
