Now that crowds are tentatively on their way back to the Premier League, Spreadex have taken a look at which sides maintained home advantage without the roar of thousands, and which teams crumbled in the absence of their supporters. We have looked at the winning percentages for home and away Premier League games played without crowds, compared to the winning percentages for the same number of home and away games prior to lockdown on a club-by-club basis. Which Premier League teams have been better at home with no fans? What stadium is the toughest to play against without crowds? What team has missed home fans the most? Let’s find out! Arsenal, West Ham thrive without home crowdsOf the 2020/21 crop – so including Leeds, West Brom and Fulham (and not Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich) – only 6 out of 20 teams saw an improvement at home without any fans. It’s maybe not surprising that, in the absence of the hostile atmospheres at the Emirates and London Stadium respectively, Arsenal and West Ham have upped their home turf win percentages. They are joined by Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham and Wolves. West Ham most improved team without home supportWest Ham, in fact, are easily the most improved team without home support – between their last 10 games at the London Stadium pre-lockdown, and the 10 games since, their win percentage jumped from 20% to 50%. More than half the league are better on the road without fansMeanwhile trips away from home are now far less intimidating – 13 out of the league’s 20 teams have upped their winning percentage on the road, with Chelsea maintaining exactly the same performance. Man United most improved team away from homeIn a huge turnaround in form on the road, Man United have managed a win percentage of 88.9%, or 8 wins in 9 games, in front of empty seats, compared to 3 in 9, or 33.3%, when fans were in attendance. Liverpool and Sheffield United have missed away support the mostNo team has seen a sharper drop-off in away form than Liverpool. From an 80% winning percentage in their 10 games pre-lockdown, to a 30% record in their 10 games since, the Reds have really struggled without their travelling Scousers. The only other team to rival Liverpool’s road woes are Sheffield United. Peripatetic Blades fans helped them to 4 away wins in their last 11 league trips before March’s lockdown. Without that support, Sheffield have failed to win a single away game across the country’s empty stadia. Anfield is the toughest away day, fans or no fansFans or no fans, Anfield is a fortress. Liverpool managed a 100% record in their 9 homes games pre-lockdown, and an 88.9% performance since crowds had to stay at home, the only blemish a draw against Burnley. Man United miss Old Trafford 12th manOld Trafford has become a ghost of itself without United’s 12th man. Man United had won 5 of their final 9 home games before lockdown, only to see their record dwindle to 3 in 9 without fans.
