With 12 teams left in the Champions League, and a frantic summer transfer window upon us, who are the top 10 transfers targets left in Europe’s premier football competition? By analysing the Player Performance statistics of every side still in the tournament, Spreadex has worked out which players clubs should be splashing the cash on in the coming weeks. The Player Performance market is calculated by: 25 points per goal, 10 points per assist, 10 points every time the woodwork is struck, 5 points per shot on target, 5 points per blocked shot inside 6 yards, 3 points per free kick won, 2 points per shot off target and 2 points per completed pass in the opposition’s half. Already the likes of Miralem Pjanic, with 573 points, and Timo Werner, with 524, have been snapped up by Barcelona and Chelsea respectively. So, who are the hottest transfer targets for 2020/21? And just how worried should RB Leipzig be? 1. Marcel Sabitzer, RB Leipzig – 656 Player Performance pointsNo. 1 with a bullet is RB Leipzig’s 26-year old Marcel Sabitzer. The Austrian has been with the club since 2014, and played a huge part in Leipzig reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, twice getting winners against Zenit St Petersburg before scoring a brace in the 2nd leg against Spurs. Leipzig are in danger of getting gutted this summer, and Sabitzer is at the top of that list, with reports suggesting Arsenal, Tottenham and AC Milan are all interested in the forward. 2. Thomas Partey, Atletico Madrid – 601 pointsTwice now Arsenal have had offers for Thomas Partey rejected, with issues surrounding his £45.5 million release clause. The Gunners would do well to persist, however; the Ghanaian has collected 601 Player Performance points in the Champions League so far, and was instrumental in Atletico’s home win over Liverpool. 3. Thiago, Bayern Munich – 585 pointsDespite picking up an impressive 585 points in only 6 Champions League appearances, reports indicate Bayern Munich could let Thiago go for as little as £27 million, with Liverpool among the frontrunners to sign the Spaniard. 4. Josip Ilicic, Atalanta – 514 pointsAtalanta have scored more Serie A goals in 2019/20 than any team this millennia – and Josip Ilicic is responsible for a huge chunk of that. He’s also the club’s top scorer in Europe, with 5 goals in 7 games (all of which came against Valencia in the last-16). 5. Emil Forsberg, RB Leipzig – 502 pointsAnother Leipzig player who could be leaving the Red Bull Arena, Emil Forsberg – who has goals against Benfica, Lyon and Tottenham in Europe – has seen constant speculation over his future at the club in the last few months. 6. Philippe Coutinho, Bayern Munich – 479 pointsWith Bayern uninterested in keeping him, and surplus to requirements for parent club Barcelona, Philippe Countinho is one of the hottest transfer targets this summer. That’s especially since he has 479 Player Performance points in 7 games. Arsenal are leading hunt for his signature, though there has also been talk of a return to Anfield. 7. Nordi Mukiele, RB Leipzig – 456 pointsFrance’s Nordi Mukiele is being linked to multiple Premier League clubs, including Tottenham and, most prominently, Liverpool. And for good reason – the defender has 456 Player Performance points in 8 games. 8. Marten de Roon, Atalanta – 426 pointsIf the media is to be believed, Man City have been scouting Atalanta’s Marten de Roon since February. Will he make his way to the Etihad? It’d be quite the transfer for the Dutchman, who already has Premier League experience with Middlesbrough. 9. Corentin Tolisso, Bayern Munich – 413 pointsThe French 25-year old has one of the best Player Performance points per game ratios in the competition, averaging 122.67 points per fixture. That’s why Manchester United are so keen on signing him this summer. 10. Memphis Depay, Lyon – 385 pointsThe Dutchman could be heading back to the Premier League. Helping Lyon to the last-16 – the French side have a 1-0 lead to protect against Juventus – Depay has attacked the attention of Arsenal. He has a formidable strike rate in 2019/20 pre-injury, with 14 goals in 18 appearances in all competitions.
