Sports Blog 01/08/2016: Season Points Preview – Football League Championship 2016/17, Friday 5th August 2016 to Saturday 6th May 2017

Finding themselves back in the country’s second division despite an all too late unbeaten run in their final 6 games Newcastle head into the new season as favourites to bounce back to the Premier League with a Points spread of 81-83. The loss of Georginio Wijnaldum and, likely, Moussa Sissoko, is a blow, though it does free up a lot of cash for Rafa Benitez to splash before the window closes. Already the Spaniard has been busy, taking Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace, Matt Ritchie from Bournemouth and Grant Hanley from Blackburn.

A fair way behind the Toon are their fellow relegated peers Norwich, who head into the weekend at a Season Points spread of 74.5-76.5. The Canaries, back in the Championship after just one season in the top flight, haven’t yet been too busy on the buying side of things, with Liverpool’s Sergi Canos the only notable signing. They have, however, lost Nathan Redmond to Southampton for around £10 million.

Having lost their play-off semi-final to Hull last season Derby are the highest ranked non-Premier League relagatee at a Points spread of 73-75. The biggest news for the Rams is that they will be led by former-Leicester chief Nigel Pearson, the club hoping that the manager can instil some of the spirit that he fed into the current Premier League champions the season before their astonishing rise.

Rounding out the top 5 are 2 teams that will be bitterly disappointed to be in the Championship, but for very different reasons. Both Aston Villa and Brighton head into 2016/17 at a Points spread of 71.5-73.5; the former ended last season rock bottom of the Premier League with a measly 17 points (half of Norwich in 19th), while the latter missed out on an automatic promotion spot thanks to their head-to-head record with Middlesbrough, going on to lose their play-off semi to Sheffield Wednesday.

At the other end of the table Rotherham and Burton are favourites for the chop at Seasons Points spreads of 49.5-51.5 and 47.5-49.5 respectively. Rotherham finished just above the relegation zone last season (admittedly by 9 points), while Burton came 2nd in League One to secure automatic promotion to the Championship. Also expected to be near the bottom at Barnsley, who have a Season Points spread of 51.5-53.5 having won the League One play-off final against Millwall back in May.
