Is Sunday’s visit from Arsenal, at 4.30pm on Sky Sports Premier League, make or break time for Manchester City’s title chase? City were very lucky mid-week. Suffering a shocking 2-1 defeat to the relegation-flirting Newcastle on Tuesday, their first loss of the New Year, the defending champions were in danger of allowing a 7 point gap to open up between them and Liverpool.
Thankfully for Pep Guardiola, the Reds themselves got a less than ideal result, unable to get anything more than a draw against Leicester. So, while that still leaves a 5 point deficit to overcome in the next few months, it could have been a lot worse... In their own way, Arsenal benefited from the mess the league’s top sides made of their mid-week fixtures. An unremarkable 2-1 win over Cardiff, combined with Chelsea’s 4-0 loss at Bournemouth and Man United’s excruciatingly late draw against Burnley, allowed the Gunners to enter the top 4 for the first time since they briefly broke through at the start of December. Given Arsenal’s less than stellar defence – with 33 goals conceded they have the worst back line of the top 5 – their best bet might be to outscore City. To do so they need Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to add to his 18 goal haul, with the Gabonese forward at a surprisingly muted Super Mega PGM of 20-24. Muted with good reason, mind; even factoring in their loss to Newcastle, City are still very tight at the back, with only Liverpool letting in fewer goals. They’re also far and the away the league’s most potent attacking force, led by Sergio Aguero at a whopping 72-84. There is every chance Sunday’s fixture could be reminiscent of the Gunners’ 2018-ending trip to Anfield, with Spreadex offering a Man City/Arsenal Goal Supremacy spread of 1.75-1.95 alongside a Total Goals spread of 3.5-3.7.
