Can either Aston Villa or Bolton put some much needed distance between them and the Championship relegation zone on Friday? Given they were beaten play-off finalists last season, Villa fans can’t be too happy how 2018/19 is panning out. A bright enough start, with opening wins over Hull and Wigan, began to unravel as August went on, the club closing out the month with 3 consecutive draws. Since then things have only got worse: across September and October the side won just 2 league games, drawing 3 and losing 5. They even slumped out of the EFL Cup in the 2nd round, suffering a miserable 1-0 defeat away to Burton Albion. All this, unsurprisingly, necessitated a change at the top, with Steve Bruce booted out at the start of October, to be replaced by Dean Smith over the international break. The club did get a new manager bounce when they returned to action against Swansea, winning 1-0, only to lose to Norwich and QPR soon after. Things are oh so slightly worse in Bolton, however. The Wanderers narrowly avoided relegation last season, and look set to straining to avoid the chop once again this year. Currently on 16 points – 4 above Reading in 22nd – they’ve won once in the their last 11 games; on top of that they’re one of the lowest scoring sides in the league, finding the back of the net a mere 11 times. Unlike Villa they are yet to replace their manager, though Phil Parkinson can’t be feeling too comfortable heading into the end of the year. Interestingly, Villa haven’t had too many issues going forwards, bagging 22 goals so far. That perhaps explains why they are so heavily favoured, at an Aston Villa/Bolton Goal Supremacy spread of 1.2-1.4 alongside an average target price of 2.7-2.9.
