Sports Blog 02/08/2016: Summer Olympics Preview – Rio 2016, Friday 5th to Sunday 21st August 2016

Spreadex are offering a GB Total Gold Medals spread of 17.5-19 ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday, far below the astonishing 29 they managed back at the triumphant 2012 games. But who exactly are Team GB’s best chances of nabbing gold in Brazil?

Well, having just won his 2nd Wimbledon title, Andy Murray will fancy retaining the title he claimed back in 2012. Federer is out, Nadal looks perpetually crocked and Djokovic is coming off his first truly shock exit in years, leaving the Scot with momentum, and luck, on his side.

Like Murray Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill will be looking to protect their gold medals gained in London, while Sir Bradley Wiggins will become the most decorated Olympian in British history with a medal of any colour.

As for some slightly newer faces, Adam Peaty is the current 50m and 100m breaststroke world record holder, Giles Scott is a 4 time world champion sailor who only missed out on a spot in London due to the stature of Ben Ainslie, and Bianca Walkden holds both World and European Taekwondo championships.

Yet, of course, it isn’t all about Team GB; in fact, they only come 3rd in Spreadex’s ‘To Top the Medal Table’ fixed odds. The USA and China unsurprisingly lead the race with 1/5 and 7/2 respectively, while Team GB at 80/1. Australia and Germany are then the long-shot outsiders, with both countries at 250/1.
