Sports Blog 03/08/2016: UEFA Champions League 3rd Round Qualifying 2nd Leg Preview – Celtic vs Astana, Wednesday 3rd August 2016



Can Celtic continue their shaky progress through the Champions League qualifying rounds with a win over Astana this evening?


Following their embarrassing away defeat to Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps in the 2nd round you would think Celtic would have learnt their lesson about underestimating opponents on the road. Yet flash forward to a fortnight later and the Scots were down by a goal in Kazakhstan thanks to a 1st half strike from Yuriy Logvinenko. Luckily 12 minutes from the whistle Leigh Griffiths equalised with the side’s only shot on target, arguably putting Celtic back in the driving seat ahead of tonight’s game in Glasgow.

While Celtic will be expected to do the business on home soil (just as they did with their 3-0 win over the Imps), their unconvincing form in qualifying hasn’t been the best start to the season for Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman has already had to defend the quality of his team multiple times, and this is before the season-proper has even begun, piling on the pressure for Celtic’s Premiership opener against Hearts on Sunday.

Team-wise the biggest news is the fact that Kolo Toure may finally make his Celtic debut having missed the 1st leg against Astana to work on his fitness, while Nir Bitton and Erik Sviatchenko are likely to be absent through injury.

As for Astana, they probably won’t be too intimated about their trip to Celtic Park give how dominant they were in Kazakhstan, though it has to be noted that last season there was a marked different between their home and away form during last season’s Champions League. Our Spreadex traders expect that divergent form to impact the result this evening, offering a Celtic/Astana Goal Supremacy spread of 0.9-1.1 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.55-2.75.
