The ceremonial start to the Premier League seasons comes on Sunday, as Chelsea take on Manchester City in the FA Community Shield, at 3pm on BT Sport 1. This weekend’s trip to Wembley provides new Blues boss Maurizio Sarri with the first big test of his Chelsea career. His appointment didn’t come until July 14th, with contractual issues with both the former Napoli man and Antonio Conte delaying the appointment until the other side of the World Cup. Though that means Sarri hasn’t had much time to do anything transfer-wise, he did bring with him Man City target Jorginho, with the Brazilian’s £57 million price tag making him Chelsea most expensive midfielder ever. Granted, City have been equally quiet in terms of signings. Their one big marquee move was a £60 million splurge on Riyad Mahrez, the Algerian magician finally leaving Leicester 2 seasons after everyone expected he would. Pep Guardiola – who is an outspoken fan of Sarri’s – had intended to add Jorginho to his ranks, only for the 26-year old to be, in the words of sources at City, ‘bullied’ into going to Stamford Bridge. As for the pre-season – which, admittedly, can be taken with a pinch of salt – neither side has done to well. Chelsea could only beat Perth Glory 1-0 in Australia, while both of their International Champions Cup fixtures so far have ended up 1-1 after 90 minutes, with the Blues going on to win and lose on penalties to Inter Milan and Arsenal respectively. City lost their first 2 ICC matches, a 1-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund followed by a 2-1 loss to Liverpool. However, they did beat Bayern Munich in Miami, coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, The defending Premier League champions are favourites to win a 2nd consecutive title, at an Outright Index spread of 44-48, away ahead of the Blues’ 15-18. It’s no surprise, then, that they have the edge going into Sunday, at a Man City/Chelsea Goal Supremacy spread of 0.3-0.5 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.75-2.95.
