While football might be continuing its journey home on Saturday, the weekend brings another sporting return: the British Grand Prix! Heading into Silverstone – roughly the halfway point of the 2018 season – things are super tight at the top of the table, a single point separating current leader Sebastian Vettel and defending champions Lewis Hamilton. Beyond back to back wins in Australia and Bahrain for Vettel, and Azerbaijan and Spain for Hamilton, neither driver has been able to string together a consistent run of finishes. Last Sunday’s trip to Austria wasn’t that great for either man, though it certainly ended up better for Vettel than his British rival. The Ferrari ace finished in 3rd, securing the 15 points needed for him to overtake Hamilton, who was forced to retire eight laps to go following a loss of fuel pressure. Still, it hasn’t greatly hurt Hamilton’s long-term hopes of holding onto his title, with the Brit at Drivers’ Championship Index spread of 49-52 to Vettel’s 43-46. He also remains odds on favourite with a fixed odds price of 8/15 to the German’s 7/4. And his chances of triumphing this weekend appear even greater. Victorious at Silverstone for the last 4 consecutive seasons, and with 5 wins in total, Hamilton would overtake Jim Clark and Alain Prost to become the out and out most successful driver in British Grand Prix history with a 1st place finish on Sunday. He goes into the weekend at a pretty major Race Index spread of 70-75, well ahead of Vettel at 57-62, with a fixed odds price of 19/20. Looking beyond the frontrunners, and Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen are the only other drivers to win a Grand Prix this season. The Australian was victorious in China and has a Race Index spread of 38-42, while the Dutch 20-year old picked up the win in Austria over the weekend and is at 42-46. Valtteri Bottas is actually ahead of both of them at 51-56, while Kimi Raikkonen, currently in 3rd place, is at 33-37.
