The Steel City derby has more stakes than normal, as Sheffield United try and muscle their way back into the Championship top 2 with a win at Wednesday on Monday. Following Leeds’ 4-0 thumping of West Brom last Friday, the Blades have slipped back into 3rd, behind the Whites by 3 points but with a game in hand AND a superior goal difference. Anything over than a victory, then, will leave them short of the automatic promotion spots, and gift Leeds the advantage heading into the final third of the season.
Though they’ve only lost once in their last 11 league games – a run that stretches back to a Boxing Day win over Derby – their loss at Swansea, and draws against Championship-leaders Norwich and Aston Villa, the latter which saw Sheffield throw away a 3-0 league in the final 10 minutes, could prove to be costly if Leeds don’t let up. As for Wednesday, a thoroughly middling season – one that sees them stuck in 14th place, safe from relegation but nowhere near promotion – perked up somewhat in February, their sole unbeaten month in 2018/19. Most recently they managed back-to-back wins over Swansea and Brentford, 2 more sides settled in for mid-table anonymity. Looking to overtake Norwich’s Teemu Pukki as the Championship’s top scorer, Billy Sharp – who has 19 goals in the league – sits at a Super Mega PGM of 33-39, with David McGoldrick then at 21-26. In contrast, Fernando Forestieri, on just 4 goals, has a Super Mega PGM of 21-26, with Steven Flatcher at 19-23 and Lucas Joao at 17-21. Though things are perhaps complicated by the potential feistiness of the fixture – Spreadex are offering a Bookings spread of 47-51- the visitors should have enough in them to pick up all 3 points, at a Sheffield United/Sheffield Wednesday (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.25-0.45.
