Chasing an unprecedented quadruple, will Man City breeze past Brighton in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final, at 5.30pm on BBC One? Though there’s plenty of evidence to suggest they’d be here regardless, City have had an excessively easy route to the semis. Rotherham, likely to be back in League One come the end of the season, were smashed 7-0 in the 3rd round. Burnley, also flirting with relegation, were the dispatched off handily with a 5-0 victory in the 4th, while a late goal for League Two’s Newport County was little consolation as they lost 4-1. Only in the quarter-finals did City look tested at all, coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.
Lurking 5 points above the drop-zone in the league, Brighton’s journey has been similarly lacking top tier opposition. They have, however, found things a bit more difficult than City. A 3-1 win at Bournemouth was a confident start; an extra-time victory over West Brom in their 4th round replay less so. Derby were then handily dealt with in the 5th round, Brighton winning 2-1, only for the Seagulls to require penalties to get past Millwall in the quarter-finals, the club requiring 2 very late goals from Jurgen Locadia and Solomon March to even get to that point. Sergio Aguero – if he plays – sits at a huge Super Mega PGM of 81-96, with Gabriel Jesus at 76-88 and Raheem Sterling at 50-58; Brighton, meanwhile, are reliant on Glenn Murray at a paltry 9-13. Have a guess who’s favourite? Spreadex are offering a rather conclusive Man City/Brighton Goal Supremacy spread of 2.35-2.55, alongside a Total Goals spread of 3.2-3.4. Sunday then sees 2 of the season’s more surprisingly propositions face-off, as Watford hosts Wolves at 6pm on BT Sport 2. Wolves arguably have more top tier scalps than anyone else in 2018/19; in the FA Cup they knocked out Liverpool in the 3rd round and Man United in the quarters, while in the league they’ve beaten Chelsea, Tottenham and United (again). Compare that to the fortunes of fellow Championship promotees Cardiff and Fulham and it shows just how well the club have done since making their Premier League return. Slightly less challenging than Wolves’ run, Watford have nevertheless been incredibly efficient in the FA Cup so far. Their first 3 fixtures were on the road, with the Hornets storming through Woking, Newcastle and QPR without conceding a single goal. The quarter-finals then saw them beat Crystal Palace 2-1 courtesy of a 79th minute winner from Andre Gray (who heads into the semis at a Super Mega PGM of 19-23, behind Troy Deeney’s 20-24 and Raul Jimenez’s 27-32). Though a single point may separate them in the league, the Midlands half of this tie are the ones who have proven their big game credentials, with Spreadex offering a Wolves/Watford Goal Supremacy spread of 0.05-0.25 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.35-2.55.
