Can Newport County secure a visit from Man City by making a mockery of Middlesbrough in Tuesday’s FA Cup 4th round replay? A decent enough start to the season, one that saw them in contention for promotion, be it automatically or through the play-offs, petered out quite significantly at the end of last year. Newport failed to win a single League Two game in December, while January saw 2 losses, a draw against Port Vale and a slender 1-0 victory over Exeter. February is yet to provide any respite either, the Exiles kicking off the month with a 3-0 defeat in Grimsby.
That’s what has made the FA Cup such a nice excursion for Newport. While their hopes of promotion have faded, perhaps to the point of non-existence, they’ve built up a nice little run in the cup, even dispatching of Leicester in the 3rd round. They left it very, very late to stay in the 4th round, however, requiring an injury time equaliser from Matt Dolan to force a replay. As for Boro, they are still very much in the promotion-mix in the Championship. Though they have, for now, slipped out of the top 2, a place they spent most of the first half of the season occupying, they are currently in line for the play-offs. They also seem to have come out the other side of their own December wobble, unbeaten in their last 7 fixtures in all competitions. Britt Assombalonga and Jordan Hugill are the best bets going forwards for Boro, and sit at Super Mega PGMs of 35-41 and 31-37 respectively; Newport’s Padraig Amond, meanwhile, is way behind at a spread of 17-21. Though the hosts have shown their ability to spring a surprise, the Championship side have the clear edge, with Spreadex offering a Middlesbrough/Newport (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.6-0.8 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.3-2.5.
