With both chasing promotion, who will take the honours in Friday’s West Midlands Derby, West Brom or Aston Villa? The Baggies have already played once this calendar week, hosting Brentford on Monday. Despite the Bees lurking near the bottom of the table, West Brom were unable to secure all 3 points, gazumped at the last by Lewis Macleod’s injury time equaliser. That leaves Darren Moore’s side in 3rd place, 4 points short of Leeds, 5 off Norwich and only one point ahead of Derby in 7th. Just outside that front pack are Villa, who are in 8th on 31 points, 4 shy of Friday’s opponents. A poor start, one that saw Steve Bruce given the boot in early October, has blossomed into a nice little run for the Villians. Since Dean Smith took over they have 5 wins in 8 league games, one more than Bruce managed in his opening 12 matches this season. They’re actually unbeaten in their last 5 fixtures, that bizarre, thrilling 5-5 draw against Nottingham Forest the only blackspot on their November/December record. Tammy Abraham clearly gets on well with his new manager. Under Smith’s guidance the England youngster has scored 8 times, 4 of which were against Forest, taking his season tally to 11. West Brom, meanwhile, remain the Championship’s most prolific side, their 42 goals 7 more than league-leaders Norwich. Though they stumbled at the start of the week, the hosts are still just about the more consistent side of the two, with Spreadex offering a West Brom/Aston Villa Goal Supremacy spread of 0.1-0.3 alongside a Total Goals spread of 3.05-3.25.
