Can a promotion-chasing West Brom get an early taste of Premier League victory in their FA Cup 4th round 2nd leg fight with Brighton? Though still the Championship’s top scorers, a fragile defence has meant the Baggies have struggled to crack the top 2 for any significant period this season. Their 2019 run has done little to change that. The year kicked off with a 2-1 loss at mid-table Blackburn, followed by a draw against Norwich, a win at Bolton and a potentially significant defeat against play-off rivals Middlesbrough.
In amongst that came a successful cup curtain raiser, a fireworks-free 1-0 win over Wigan. Less impressive was their goalless draw at Brighton in the 4th round, setting up Wednesday night’s replay at the Hawthorns. Like West Brom, Brighton haven’t the brightest of starts to the New Year. Just as it looked like they’d ended their December slump, picking up draws against Arsenal and West Ham either side of a win over Everton, the Seagulls lost 3 league games on the trot, bested by Liverpool, Man United and Fulham. Most recently they were held to a goalless draw against Watford. Solace was found in the FA Cup, as they beat Bournemouth 3-1, only to lose a step in that aforementioned draw against the Baggies. Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez will post a threat to Brighton, and go into the replay at matching Super Mega PGMs of 28-33. With one of the least potent attacks in the Premier League, the Seagulls are reliant on Glenn Murray, whose 10 goals this season leaves him with a Super Mega PGM of 32-38. Given that neither side is exactly at their best at the moment, Wednesday could be something of a toss-up, with Spreadex offering a Brighton/West Brom (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0-0.2, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.4-2.6.
