Will Lewis Hamilton secure a record-equalling 7th Canadian Grand Prix victory this Sunday? The 2018 season got off to a relatively poor start for Championship-leader Hamilton. He was the runner-up in Australia, came 3rd in Bahrain and even slumped to 4th in China. Yet wins in Azerbaijan and Spain, alongside a wobble from main-rival Sebastian Vettel, have left him with a 14 point lead over the German, even with the Brit picking up bronze in Monaco. Vettel has been on the opposite trajectory. Victorious in the first 2 Grand Prix, he came in 8th in China, a knock that led to 4th place finishes in Azerbaijan and Spain. But a silver medal in Monaco helped close the gap, and gives him a bit more momentum heading to Montreal. In terms of their season long prices, Hamilton unsurprisingly has the edge; he sits at a Drivers’ Champions Index spread of 49-52 to Vettel’s 41-44, with the pair at fixed odds of 1/2 and 2/1 respectively. Hamilton and Vettel haven’t had it all their own way, however. Daniel Ricciardo is equal in Grand Prix victories this season, finishing in 1st in both China and, most recently, Monaco. Frustratingly for the Australian, his hopes of fighting for his first ever Championship were dealt a blow by a pair of retirements. In Bahrain Ricciardo had to pull out in the 2nd lap, a retirement he described as ‘brutal’; then in Azerbaijan he crashed into the back of Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen, wiping both out of the race. Still, he remains a dark house, at a Drivers’ Champions Index spread of 21-24 and fixed odds of 20/1. As for this weekend’s battle at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Hamilton – who won the past 3 Canadian Grand Prix – leads with a Race Index spread of 68-73. He’s followed by Vettel at 63-68, Valtteri Bottas at 46-51, and Ricciardo – who faces multiple grid penalties due to the need to replace his MGU-K – at 39-43.
