Can Andy Murray reach the French Open semi-finals with a win over Kei Nishikori on Wednesday afternoon? While Murray hasn’t necessarily looked his best this tournament, he has shown the requisite grit to make it to his 6th quarter-final at Roland Garros (the last time he failed to make it this far was, excluding injury in 2013, back in 2010). Early wobbles against Andrey Kuznetsov and Martin Klizan were soon overcome, while he eventually made quick work of Juan Martin del Potro and Karen Khachanov. He has also been very lucky in regards to his side of the draw, bypassing both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Not that the former world no. 1 has been too much to worry about in 2017, most recently falling in 3 sets – the final one in which he failed to nab a single game – to Dominic Thiem in his own quarter-final. Nadal, on the other hand, has looked formidable. Yet to drop a set, the clay colossus has barely lost any games either, averaging 5 per match up until his quarter-final against fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, who pulled out during the 2nd set. As for Nishikori, he is aiming for his first ever French Open semi-final. Yet he has shown a fair amount of weakness so far, especially in the opening sets. With the exception of his 2nd round tie against Jeremy Chardy, the 27-year old has lost the first set of every match – and in the case of his 3rd round face-off against world no. 67 Chung Hyeon the first 2. Murray will look to take advantage of Nishikori’s habit of stumbling out of the gate, and heads to Court Philippe Chatrier with a Match Supremacy spread of 11-14 and a Points Supremacy spread of 10-15.
