Can England build on their Russian romp when they face Spain in their first ever Nations League bout on Saturday, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports Football? There likely weren’t many people that’d expect England to have come out the other side of the 2018 World Cup in a better state than Spain. Firing their manager 2 days before their first game proved to be just as wise a move in practice as it sounds on paper. Though they topped Group B, a) their sole win was a 1-0 affair against Iran, and b) they bottled it in the next round, losing on penalties to the hosts Russia. And what of England? Well, that’s a well-worn tale at this point. And while there is plenty of truth to the fact Gareth Southgate’s group of likely lads found itself on a very fortunate side of the draw, nothing can take away their semi-final finish and the psychological importance of the penalty victory over Colombia in the last 16. So, what’s next? England have another chance to prove they can hang with the big boys AND and opportunity to get revenge on Croatia when they meet their League A Group 4 bedfellows in Rijeka next month. In terms of the squad, after Jamie Vardy’s retirement from international football, they’re even more reliant on captain Harry Kane going forwards. Luckily Spain are similarly light up front; with Diego Costa out due to personal reasons, their options are (so far) Chelsea flop Alvaro Morata, Valencia’s Rodrigo and Celta Vigo’s 31-year old Iago Aspas. Before the summer the hosts wouldn’t be fancied in a fixture like this. Now it is too close to call, with Spreadex offering a choice England/Spain Goal Supremacy spread of -0.1-0.1, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.2-2.4.
