Sports Blog 08/08/2016: Rio 2016 Tennis Preview – Men’s & Women’s Singles, Monday 8th August 2016

Men’s Singles
The biggest news of the Men’s draw, and arguably one of the stories of the 2016 Olympics so far, was Novak Djokovic’s 1st round defeat to Juan Martin del Potro, his first opening-round loss since January 2009. Interestingly it seem that del Potro is Djokovic’s Olympic bogeyman, the Argentine preventing the Serbian from winning the bronze medal back in London 4 years ago. Just as it did at Wimbledon Djokovic’s defeat will likely give Andy Murray a huge boost, with the Scot facing his own Argentinian Juan (Monaco) in the 2nd round.

In terms of Monday’s matches the 4th, 5th and 5th seeds are all in action. Kei Nishikori, who went out in the quarter-finals in 2012, is set to face John Millman, with the Japanese star at Match Supremacy spread of 13.5-16.5. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, another 2012 quarter-finalist, takes on Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller, and is at a Match Supremacy spread of 6-8, while Gael Monfils is expected to beat Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva at a Match Supremacy spread of 14.5-16.5.

Women’s Singles
While not quite as shocking as Djokovic’s loss, the triple defeat of Agnieszka Radwanska, Venus Williams and Roberta Vinci does mean the 4th to 6th seeds in the Women’s draw are already out of the competition.

Compared to the Men’s draw there are a far few more big names in action this Monday. 2nd seed Angelique Kerber is handed a relatively tough test in the shape of Eugenie Bouchard, but is expected to win at a Match Supremacy spread of 6.5-9.5. Garbine Muguruza, the 3rd seed heading into Rio, faces Japan’s Nao Hibino and has a Match Supremacy spread of 14.5-16.5.

Petra Kvitova, meanwhile, has a Game Supremacy spread of 4.5-7.5 against Caroline Wozniacki, with Madison Keys at 10-13 against Kristina Mladenovic. Finally late tonight Serena Williams, attempting to defend the gold medal she gained in London, faces France’s Alize Cornet, and has a hefty Match Supremacy spread of 15-17.
