Can England end their awful streak when they take on South Africa in the 1st of 3 Tests this Saturday, at 4.05pm on Sky Sports Action? Eddie Jones’ side are a long way from where they were in 2016 and 2017, a period that saw them lose just once while also picking up a pair of Six Nations titles. 2018 has seen that form disappear completely, resulting in their worst ever Six Nations result – a 5th place finish – since the tournament inception at the start of the millennium. And then, as one final humiliation, they were beaten by the Barbarians in a game meant to get England off on the right foot for their South African tour. Luckily the Springboks also lost their own warm –up match, a narrow 20-22 defeat to Wales in, of all places, Washington, DC. Before that their last international was all the way back in December where they also fell short against the Welsh by a measly 2 points, that time succumbing to a 24-22 loss in Cardiff. Historically England don’t have the best record against South Africa. In 38 Tests they’ve won just 13 times to the Springboks’ 23, with honours shared the other 2 times. And their chances in this Series don’t look great, with the hosts odds on at 8/13 to end the month victorious to England’s 11/8. As for the method of victory, Spreadex have South Africa 3-0 at a spread of 25-28 and 2-1 at 30-33, with England 2-1 at 21-24 and 3-0 at just 13-16. Even more dramatically, England haven’t won at Ellis Park – labelled the ‘spiritual home’ of South African rugby by Jones – in 32 years. They might find it difficult to break that run, with Spreadex offering a South Africa/England Points Supremacy spread of 2-4, alongside a Performance Supremacy spread of 8-16.
