Can RB Leipzig or Bayer Leverkusen gain the upper hand in the race for the 4th of the Bundesliga’s Champions League spots when they face off this Monday? While Bayern Munich have already secured their 6th consecutive domestic title, sitting atop the table with a 20 point lead, things are a bit more uncertain for those other sides chasing a place in next season’s premier European competition. Schalke and Borussia Dortmund have a good claim on 2nd and 3rd, sitting 6 and 5 points above Eintracht Frankfurt in 4th place respectively. Equal to Frankfurt on 46 points is Leipzig, followed one point behind by Leverkusen in 6th. Crucially, however, Leipzig and Leverkusen have a game in hand over their rivals, meaning tonight’s result will cause a bit of a Bundesliga shift. Leipzig have made a decent fist of repeating last season’s shock success, especially given they have been juggling European football for the first time in the club’s history. That they are still in the Europa League – they exited the Champions League after a middling group stage showing – may come to impact what happens on Monday night. That’s because Leipzig have the 2nd leg of their Europe League quarter-final against Marseille on Thursday. And while they travel to France with a narrow 1-0 lead thanks to Timo Werner, the fixture is far from over, leaving Ralph Hasenhuttl with something of a selection headache. Leverkusen aren’t hampered by such highfalutin issues. 2017/18 has been a course correction for the former Bundesliga champions, after last season’s disappointing 12th place finish. They were even 2nd for a hot minute, only for inconsistent form from early February onwards to put their hopes of Champions League football in peril. Last time the two met it ended in a 2-2 draw, Leverkusen twice coming from behind. They might have to do the same on Monday, with Spreadex offering a RB Leipzig/Bayer Leverkusen Goal Supremacy spread of 0.15-0.35 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.8-3.
