Will Man City massacre Burton Albion when the latter rocks up to Etihad for Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final 1st leg? In the club’s worst Premier League patch for quite some time, December was a bit of a nightmare for City. Losses to Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester in the space of 2 and a half weeks saw them switch places with Liverpool at the top of the table, abandoning what was a 5 point lead at the start of the month.
They managed to keep the Reds in their sights in their first fixture of the New Year, beating Liverpool 2-1 on January 3rd. But while that saw Jurgen Klopp’s 2018/19 unbeaten run in the Premier League come to an end, it still leaves the Scouse side 4 points clear in 1st place. In an ominous sign for Burton, Rotherham ended up becoming a victim of City’s frustrations over the weekend, the Championship side suffering a 7-0 FA Cup defeat, with goals for Raheem Sterling, Philip Foden, Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane (the other was an own goal from Semi Ajayi). Sadly for the Brewers, a lot of those names are set to appear on Wednesday night. Mahrez has a Super Mega PGM of 52-60, with Sane at 53-61, Sterling at 61-71 and Jesus at 99-119; top scorer Sergio Aguero, meanwhile, is at a terrifying 119-144. This is far and away the biggest test Burton have faced in the EFL Cup this season. Their only Premier League competition has been against the relegation-battling Burnley in the 3rd round, a game they won 2-1. Since then they’ve beaten Nottingham Forest 3-2 at home and Middlesbrough 1-0 away. Not to put down Nigel Clough’s achievement, but Wednesday’s semi-final 1st leg feels less a question of who will win, and more a question of how many will City win by. Spreadex are offering a Man City/Burton Albion Goal Supremacy spread of 3.65-3.85 alongside an average target price of 4.2-4.5.
