Sports Blog 09/06/2016: Tournament Preview – UEFA Euro 2016, Friday 10th to Sunday 10th July 2016

Obviously the crowning jewel in Spreadex’s Euro 2016 smorgasbord is its Outright Index. These spreads allow you to bet on not just the champion, but effectively where a team will finish. The make-up of the spread sees the winner receives 100 points, the runner-up 75 and the semi-finalists 50 apiece, with the losing quarter finalists nabbing 25, the losing last 16 10 and anyone who doesn’t escape the group stages a big fat zero.

Although they avoided the qualification process due to being the hosts, France have more than made the most of their friendlies. Since last September the French side have won 9 of their last 10 games, the only loss coming against England in the aftermath of the tragic November attacks in Paris. While 2015 saw victories over competition rivals Portugal and Germany France have really hit their stride in the last couple of months, scoring 13 goals in 4 games (while admittedly conceding 6). A fairly easy group (including Romania, Albania and Switzerland) should leave a clear path to the last 16, with France at the best Outright Index spread of 51-55 alongside fixed odds of 14/5.

Beyond the hosts the top 7 teams involve all the usual faces. Germany, at an Outright Index spread of 46-50, would perhaps have nudged about France if they didn’t have a tougher group (including qualification rivals Poland and the UK’s own Northern Ireland), while defending champions Spain are at 41.5-45.5. Dropping down somewhat dramatically, England then sit at 31-34, with Belgium at 28-31, Portugal at 25.5-28.5 and Italy at 21.5-24.5. Again, the Belgian and Italian Outright Index spreads would likely be higher (with the former having one of the best squads in the competition) if they weren’t drawn in the Group of Death together, with Sweden and the Republic of Ireland rounding out that formidable quartet.

Fresh off another strong, title-winning season at Bayern Munich Thomas Muller is favourite take the Golden Boot at 7/1 fixed odds, the German striker having nabbed the award at the 2010 World Cup (and having been runner up in 2014). Just behind Muller at 8/1 is Cristian Ronaldo, though the Portuguese wizard may struggle against the relatively mean defences of Austria and Iceland. At 9/1 is Atletico Madrid’s (though not for long if you read the papers) Antoine Griezmann, while Robert Lewandowski, top scorer in the qualifiers with a whopping 13 goals, is at 14/1.

If those odds sound a bit bland to you then Spreadex have you sorted with a more esoteric selection of spreads. The amount of goals scored by England (in 90 minutes only) is at a spread of 7.4-7.9, with goals conceded at 4.2-4.6. If you plump for our ‘Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party’ spread then, for 15-19, you will be desperately multiplying the forward’s shots off target with his shots on target after every England game. And if you are waiting for England’s no. 1 goalkeeper to step up when penalties inevitably rear their ugly head then take a gander at the 18-22 ‘Brave Hart’ spread, where 10 points are awarded per foul won by Hart during the 90 minutes, plus 20 for every penalty saved and 100 for every shot taken (including extra time AND penalties).

And, of course, make sure to check back at Spreadex daily for all the updated match spreads and fixed odds as the competition continues!
