Can England carry their sunny home form overseas, as they head into Wednesday’s opening ODI in Sri Lanka? With visits from both Australia and India, the English have had a nice workout in the last few months. The Aussies were completely bowled over, losing all 5 matches in the ODI series before slumping to a 28 run defeat in the tour-closing T20I fixture. As for India, they only faired a bit better. Success in the T20I series, with victories at Old Trafford and Bristol County Ground overcoming England’s win at Sophia Gardens, was then followed by a 2-1 ODI series defeat in mid-July and a 4-1 Test series trouncing across August and September. So, all in all, a very successful summer. And there looks to be no reason why this run can’t continue this autumn. In their last 14 ODI ‘series’ – going back to 2016’s June visit from Sri Lanka – England have been victorious 11 times, the only blips being a slip up in India 18 months ago, 2017’s unsuccessful ICC Champions Trophy campaign and this June’s bizarre one match loss in Scotland. Sri Lanka’s most recent ODI prep, on the other hand, was a 3-2 loss at home to South Africa. That may sound close, but in reality the hosts had lost the first 3 matches, rendering the 2 final victories pretty hollow. Keeping that in mind, it should come as no surprise that England are at a binary To Win the Series spread of 71.4-77.8 to Sri Lanka’s 22.2-28.2, and are heavily odds on favourites at 2/7. Spreadex also have England and Sri Lanka at Series Index spreads of 50.5-53.5 and 21.5-24.5 respectively, alongside a Series Supremacy (Eng/Sri) spread of 100-130. As for Wednesday’s curtain raiser, Spreadex are offering an England/Sri Lanka Supremacy spread of 18-28, with England at 63.6-69.3 to win the match.
