Dealt arguably the toughest Champions League draw, can Man United avoid a Barcelona battering at 8pm on BT Sport 2? Wednesday’s hosts have definitely lost the new manager-sheen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought over with him from Norway. They’ve lost 3 of their last 4 matches, including a pair of Premier League and FA Cup defeats at the hands of 2018/19 super-surprise Wolves.
Yet Solskjaer managed to work miracles from a similarly difficult spot in the Champions League last-16. Doing what no team have done in the history of Europe’s top tier competition, United came back from a 2-0 Old Trafford loss against PSG to win 3-1 in Paris, put through to the quarter-finals by a remarkably poised 94th minute penalty from Marcus Rashford. Rashford goes into the 1st leg at a Super Mega PGM of 16-20, the same price as Paul Pogba, and a bit behind Romelu Lukaku, who scored a brace at the Parc des Princes, at 20-24. With another La Liga title almost sewn up, and a Copa de Rey final booked against Valencia at the end of May, Barcelona are chasing a treble – quadruple if you include their pre-season Supercopa de Espana victory. They had a bit of a wobble in their Champions League last-16 1st leg in Lyon, only to destroy the French side 5-1 at the Nou Camp. Having racked up an astonishing 43 goals this season, including 33 in La Liga and 8 in the Champions League, Lionel Messi heads into Old Trafford with a pretty hefty Super Mega PGM of 54-62, while Luis Suarez, who has been slacking with just 23 goals, is at 31-37. One thing working in United’s favour is Barca’s form away from home. Though far from bad, those times when the Spanish side has failed to come out victorious have tended to be on the road – in fact, 9 times out of 14 fixtures, including 3 of their 4 losses in all competitions. It’s not much to cling on – hence why Spreadex are offering a Barcelona/Man United (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.35-0.55, with a Total Goals spread of 2.7-2.9 – but it’s something.
