Can Ireland keep atop Euro qualifying Group D with a victory over Gibraltar on Monday, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports Main Event? Following an awful showing in the Nations League – a campaign that ended with them bottom of their group and relegated to League C – Ireland have gotten off to a brighter start as they try and reach the cross-continent 2020 Euros. At least, brighter start results-wise – their performances have left a lot to be desired.
Qualifying opened in late March with a win, which sounds good on paper but is far less impressive in practice given it was a 1-0 victory against regular international whipping boys Gibraltar. Another 3 points followed as they scraped past Georgia 1-0, while last Friday they stole a late 1-1 draw against Denmark, the 3rd stalemate against the Danes in the last 8 months. So, technically they’re unbeaten, and ahead of Switzerland by 3 points having played one more game. But Mick McCarthy will want more from them when they host Gibraltar on Monday evening. As for Julio Cesar Ribas’s men, they are winless and goalless after 2 games, which, to be blunt, is hardly a surprise. That aforementioned 1-0 loss against Ireland was followed by a 3-0 defeat in Georgia, leaving them as the only side in Group D without a point. Though there is little recent evidence to suggest this’ll be the case, Ireland are fancied to produce a big win. Aston Villa’s Scott Hogan has a massive Super Mega PGM of 101-121, followed by Sheffield United’s David McGoldrick at 89-104 and Preston’s Sean Maquire and Callum Robinson at 51-59 and 44-51 respectively. As for the result itself, Spreadex are offering an Ireland/Gibraltar Goal Supremacy spread of 3.7-3.9, alongside a Total Goals spread of 4.15-4.45.
