Sports Blog 10/05/2016: Premier League Preview – West Ham vs Manchester United, Tuesday 10th May 2016

Things didn’t exactly go to plan for the Hammers in their penultimate game at the Boleyn Ground. Despite being unbeaten in the Premier League for 10 games Slaven Bilic’s side slumped to a woeful 4-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea, an own goal from Stephen Kingsley their only consolation. Not only did that help tarnish part one of Upton Park’s send-off, but it also did (perhaps irreparable) damage to the side’s top 5 push.

West Ham now sit in 7th place, 1 point behind Southampton (over whom they have a game in hand), and 4 behind Man United in 5th place. If they can edge up to 6th they will break in the Olympic Stadium with Europa League football (thanks to Manchester City winning the League Cup). If they can’t, but still finish in 7th, then the Hammers will be cheering on Manchester United in the FA Cup final, as a Red Devils win would cause one of those much-coveted places in Europe to shift down the table.

Whilst West Ham chase the Europa League Man United, despite their rather lacklustre season, find themselves facing a likely FA Cup victory and a spot in the Champions League next year. They can actually still finish as high as 3rd, if they win at Upton Park and beat Bournemouth on Sunday AND City and Arsenal lose their final games of the season. Given that the Gunners host the already relegated Aston Villa 4th place is more likely, and thanks to City’s late in the season capitulation 2 wins for United would catapult them into the Champions League regardless of what their rivals manage against Newcastle.

Despite the importance of the game it seems our traders think the emotion of the Boleyn Ground goodbye may well get the better of the Hammers, Spreadex offering a Manchester United/West Ham (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.1-0.3 with a Total Goals spread of 2.7-2.9.
