Sports Blog 11/08/2016: Rio 2016 Preview – Athletics, Friday 12th to Sunday 14th August 2016

That also means some of Britain’s favourite stars, and best medal hopes, are set to make their first appearance in Brazil, including Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah.

Ennis-Hill will begin her Heptathlon defence on Friday just over 4 years since she won gold in London, and heads into the event at an Index spread of 28-31 (where the gold medallist gets 50 points, the silver medallist gets 25 and the bronze medallist gets 10). In London Ennis-Hill won the 100m hurdles and 800m, coming 2nd in the 200m and long jump, 5th in the high jump and 10th in both the shot put and javelin.

Yet not too far behind the Sheffield hero is her Team GB rival Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who goes into Friday with a Heptathlon Index spread of 22-25 and will be looking to beat her 14th place finish on home soil back in 2012. Beyond the British pair Canada’s Brianne Theisen-Eaton, who came 10th in London, has the 3rd best Index spread, at 16-19.

Friday also sees the Women’s 10000m, with Team GB’s hopes of a medal pretty slim, their best chance being Jo Pavey at a meagre 0.1-1 spread. The clear favourite is Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana, at a spread of 39-42, ahead of her fellow countrywoman, and 2 time 10000m Olympic gold medallist, Tirunesh Dibaba, who sits at a spread of 20-23. Ayana is currently the 5000m World Champion, and has the 2nd fastest speed in that event of all-time, trailing only Dibaba; yet Ayana actually beat Dibaba in her debut 10000m race at the end of June, making her favourite to win her first ever Olympic gold medal in Rio.

Finally in the early hours of Sunday morning (for those on GMT at least) Mo Farah will attempt to capture his second Men's 10000m gold medal at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange. Farah is the overwhelming favourite for the event, at an Index spread of 41-44, with Kenya’s Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor (who finished 2nd to his British rival at the World Championship in Beijing last year) a fair way behind at 18-21.
