Sports Blog 11/12/2014: Match Preview – Besiktas vs Tottenham, Thursday 11th December



Mauricio Pochettino’s team have an awkward encounter in Turkey tonight, as Tottenham travel to Istanbul to battle Besiktas in the Europa League.


1st placed Turkish side to come top of their group. With Besiktas on 9 points behind Tottenham’s 11, a win or a draw for the North London side would seem them finish first, and avoid a theoretically more difficult team in the next round.

Earlier in the season the two teams drew at White Hart Lane, and Besiktas are entering the tie with the better form, with 5 wins and a draw in the last six games. Tottenham, on the other hand, have been much less consistent recently, with 3 wins, 2 losses and a draw, their most last game being a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace.

Spurs will also have one eye on a tough Sunday game, as they travel to Wales to play one of the Premier League’s surprise performers, Swansea, who sit a 7th to Tottenham’s 10th. With only one point separating these two UK sides, Pochettino will have a tough choice over what competition to favour with his selection tonight.

Here at Spreadex, our clients have been favouring the Turkish side, with a Besiktas/Tottenham Goal Supremacy at spread 0.05-0.25, alongside a Total Goal spread of 2.3-2.5. In terms of goal scorers, with no-one bar Red Bull Salzburg’s Alan scoring more than him in the Europa League, Harry Kane is at 6/1 to score first, with 13 goals in all competitions. With Besiktas’ Chelsea reject Demba Ba missing from the tie with a broken toe, Kane will be seeking to solidify a first place finish for Tottenham, and allow Pochettino a nicer time abroad than he is having back home.
