In what is arguably the biggest test of their Premier League run-in, can Liverpool hold onto the top spot with a win over Chelsea this Sunday, at 4.30pm on Sky Sports? From a rocky group stage showing has emerged a very confident Champions League campaign for the Reds. Their 3-1 win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the last-16 was a season highlight, while on Tuesday they put one foot in the semi-finals with a routine 2-0 victory over Porto.
That latest result followed on from a 12 game unbeaten streak in the league, including 4 wins from their last 4 fixtures, one that seems Liverpool sit precariously in 1st place. Yet with Man City breathing down their necks – the defending champions have a game in hand – Jurgen Klopp’s Kop family can’t afford to drop a single point. Chelsea, who are looking to cement their top 4 aspirations, will have something to say about that on Sunday. The Blues seem to be out the other side of a rough start to 2019, with 3 consecutive wins in the league – something they last did as August turned into September – and an away victory at Slavia Prague in their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday. They also have a decent record against Liverpool in 2018/19. Chelsea ended the Reds’ unbeaten start to the season in the 3rd round of the EFL Cup in late-September, before drawing with them 1-1 at Stamford Bridge 3 days later. Given that Man City will most like batter Crystal Palace early Sunday afternoon, it is hard to overemphasise how disastrous anything but a win would be for the hosts. Luckily they seem to have the edge of their visitors, with Spreadex offering a Liverpool/Chelsea Goal Supremacy spread of 0.8-1, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.7-2.9 and a Bookings spread of 40-44.
