Facing arguably his toughest test yet, can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man United maintain their unbeaten streak when they host PSG in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 1st leg? Escaping the toxic cloud of the Jose Mourinho regime, United have looked like a team reborn under their Norwegian alumnus. Solskjaer is yet to lose a game as manager; in fact, he has won 10 out of his 11 fixtures in charge, the only black mark being a (very) late 2-2 draw against Burnley at the end of January.
That run includes a 1-0 win over Tottenham at Wembley, and a confident 3-1 victory at Arsenal in the FA Cup 4th round, one that sets up a clash with Chelsea this weekend. Get through that and they have a bloody good chance of going all the way in the Cup, given just how many top tier sides have already fallen out of the competition. Paul Pogba has benefited enormously following the managerial shift. Under Solskjaer the Frenchman has scored 8 times, leaving him with a Super Mega PGM of 22-27. Despite outscoring his peers, that still puts Pogba behind Marcus Rashford, at 28-34, and Romelu Lukaku, at 31-37. Sat 10 points clear in 1st place – with 2 games in hand! – it took until the start of February for PSG to suffer a defeat in Ligue 1. That was only their 3rd loss of the season across all competitions, the others being their thrilling Champions League curtain raiser against Liverpool, and their quarter-final Coupe de la Ligue exit at the hands of bottom of the table Guingamp (a side they then went on to beat 9-0 just 10 days later). Luckily for United, PSG are missing two heads of their formidable upfront Cerberus, with both Neymar and Edinson Cavani both ruled out due to injury. It speaks to how strong the French champions are going forwards that Kylian Mbappe is their remaining option, the World Cup-winning youngster heading into the 1st leg at a Super Mega PGM of 38-44. Those absences, alongside the hosts’ newfound confidence, means Solskjaer’s record might remain intact, with Spreadex offering a Man United/PSG Goal Supremacy spread of 0.2-0.4 and a Total Goals spread of 2.8-3.
