Can West Brom bag another win when they travel to Birmingham, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports Football this Friday? It’s the first fixture in this iteration of the West Midlands derby since 2015, when the Baggies beat the Brummies 2-1 in the FA Cup 4th round proper. For a while their fortunes continued to differ, West Brom testing the top 10 of the Premier League as Birmingham remained trapped in the Championship. Now, however, the Baggies have been brought down a peg, relegated to the 2nd division after finishing at the rock bottom of the top flight. So far West Brom has kept themselves in the mix for an immediate promotion back to the Premier League, if not with the Championship-topping confidence they would have liked. Things got off to the worst imaginable start with a 2-1 loss at home to Bolton, followed by a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest. They then managed to snatch a 4-3 win over Norwich, only to really step it up a gear against QPR, beating the London club 7-1. Yet that was immediately followed by a 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough, undermining whatever confidence was gained by that hefty victory. Most recently they bested fellow 2017/18 relegatees Stoke, a brace from Dwight Gayle giving them a 2-1 win. As for Birmingham, they look like they might have a fight on their hands this season, being one of only 3 teams in the Championship – the other 2 being Ipswich and Reading in 23rd and 24th – yet to win a game. Admittedly, they’ve only actually lost twice, both 1-0 against Middlesbrough and Bolton. They drew their other 4 fixtures, with 2-2 tussles with Norwich and Nottingham Forest, and a pair of goalless snoozefests against Swansea and QPR. That leaves them a step behind Darren Moore’s inconsistent, but sporadically excellent, Baggies, with Spreadex offering a West Brom/Birmingham Goal Supremacy spread of 0.2-0.4 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.4-2.6.
