Can Celtic nudge closer to a spot in the Champions League proper by beating AEK Athens this Tuesday, at 7pm on BT Sport 2? So far the Bhoys have been relatively untroubled during qualifying. The 1st round saw them hammer Armenia’s Alashkert 6-0 over 2 legs, while the 2nd round saw a 3-1 victory at home against Rosenborg followed by a 0-0 draw in Norway. Yet they tripped up slightly against AEK last week. Taking the lead thanks to a 17th minute goal from Callum McGregor, Celtic they blew that lead just before the break, with Belgian forward Viktor Klonaridis scoring the equaliser. It seemed like things might got the Scots’ way in the 2nd half, as Konstantinis Galanopoulos received his marching orders with 35 minutes to go. But Celtic couldn’t make the most of this opening, with AEK leaving Glasgow with their away goal advantage intact. Worryingly are also signs that this pre-season exertion might be taking its toll. Though the defending champions breezed through their curtain raiser against Livingston, winning 3-1 at Celtic Park, for the first time since 2014 Celtic have lost a Premiership game in August. That result was a 1-0 defeat away from home against Hearts, with Kyle Lafferty nabbing the sole goal not long after the restart. Luckily Brendan Rodgers has a few aces in his arsenal. Somehow Celtic have managed to keep hold of Moussa Dembele, who scored 16 goals in all competitions last season, while midfielder Scott Sinclair is always good for a few, being the club’s top scorer in 2017/18. Odsonne Edouard, who became the club’s most expensive signing ever this summer having been on loan from PSG last season, has also made his presence felt, scoring 4 goals already. Tuesday’s 2nd leg is actually too close to call in the eyes of our traders, with Spreadex offering a choice AEK Athens/Celtic Goal Supremacy spread of -0.1-0.1, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.15-2.35.
